If you have an iPhone X, you can only see the battery percentage from Control Center. Just swipe down from the top-right corner of your display. Battery Percentage isn't available on iPod touch.  

For reasons uknown, Apple jumps the sign strength indicators above the left rather than keeping them where they can be, which is often just a little jarring, but it's to make space for the power supply percentage icon, and also other status bar symbols like Bluetooth and Location Services.
